Installation Help
B1.  Does the console have to be installed onto a server?   Top
No, the console can be installed onto a normal workstation OR a server. This makes it cheap and easy to have multiple control points in your organisation without having to have a lot of server machines.
B2.  How do I install all Components of Browse Control onto a Single PC - Standalone/Home user?   Top
If you are planning on using the client on the same PC as the console, please install both the client and the console onto the same computer.  During the client install, please enter LOOPBACK as the server name when prompted.  Also, in the options for the console set Browse Control to start when Windows starts.
B3.  Why can't I see the clients in the console window after installing?   Top
This problem is typically caused via connectivity problems between the console and client.  Check the following settings and if you have further issues contact support@codework.com
  1. Refresh the console by hitting F5 or going to View > Refresh
  2. Try using the IP address of the server machine as opposed to the computer name, when prompted in the client install.  If your console is getting an IP address from a DHCP Server then we recommend you give it a permanent lease.
  3. Make sure that you are able to ping the console from the client - by name and IP address
  4. Check Network connections
B4.  How do I configure Browse Control so that it will work with my Proxy Server?   Top
You do not have to install Browse Control onto your Proxy Server.  If you go to the console window and click on Tools --> Options (ctrl + O), this will bring up the Options window.  Go to the Port/Proxy option and make sure that the ports for the corresponding protocols, match the ports used by your proxy server.
B5.  I have lots of machines and can't go to each one to install the Browse Control client.  Is there a way to do it via login scripting?   Top
Yes you can install the Browse Control client via login scripting.  Please follow the following instructions:
  1. Share the Client directory in the Browse Control program folder (default:  C:\Program Files\Codework\BrowseControl\)
  2. In the Client directory there is an Installer.properties file than you can open in Notepad.  Edit the SERVERNAME and SERVERPORT with your settings.
  3. Add the following script to your logon scripting: \\servername\client\cwclient.exe
  4. Upon rebooting of the PCs the Client will be fully installed.

On the “Add URLs” screen add the URL addresses of the sites to be made accessible to the users. Please note that http:// prefix does not need to be added. Just enter the www address. This can be resolved by selecting the specific Group or Client and select File/Refresh on the menu.
C8.  What are the ways to allow Internet access to client systems?
Top

Application Blocker
D1. Can you block the running of an application in a remote computer with Browse Control?   Top
Yes, Browse Control will block the running of an application in a remote computer. Just ensure that port 8999 (the port used to communicate between console and client) is not blocked.
D2.  Is it possible to block Screen Savers with Application Blocker feature Browse Control?   Top
Yes, you can block Screen Savers with the Application Blocker feature.  Just enter in the appropriate "Original Filename" of the screen saver which you wish to block into the App. Blocker.
D3.  Is the Application Blocker feature a mere window blocker?   Top
No, the feature is much more than that.  By using the original filename of the application you allow Browse Control to prevent the file from running via its internal windows filename, which allows us to block the execution of the programs, preventing them from running at all.
D4.  Is it possible to cheat/get around the Application Blocker by renaming the exe file?   Top
No, because Browse Control deals with the Original Filename, you cannot getting around the Application Blocker simply by renaming (like you can with policies).
D5.  Is it possible to show a message box to the user while the user tries to run a blocked application?   Top
Yes, you can show a message to the user when they try to run a blocked application.  To do so, please go to Options, under the Tools menu (Ctrl + O).  Under the General tab, you can enter your custom message under the "App Blocker Message" text area.
D6. Is it possible to block applications silently, ie; with out showing a message box? Top
Yes, you can block applications silently.  Go into Options (Tools --> Options, Ctrl + O) and select the General Tab.  Delete the message displayed under "App Blocker Message".  This will now prevent all the selected applications from running, without displaying a warning message to the user.
White Listing
E1.  Why isn't the site I entered into the white list working when I turn the internet off?   Top
The website which you may be trying to give access to, may get data or reference from a domain that is not on your white list. This tends to occur on websites such as bbc.co.uk and dell.com, as some image and areas of the page are retrieved from different sites. You can ensure that all the content loads by entering in " bbc. " as opposed to bbc.co.uk or " dell. " as opposed to dell.com. You can also use this method to give access to domains which are localised by country (see c4).
E2.  How can I give access to ALL of the sites localised on a domain ie. Yahoo.com, Yahoo.ie, Yahoo.co.uk?   Top
To allow access to all extensions of a known domain (works for sites like: Google, Yahoo, Dell, BBC etc.), then simply enter in the following URL into the white list. "yahoo." Ie. The name of the site followed by a dot. This will allow access to everything in the Domain of Yahoo. and so will cover Yahoo.com, Yahoo.ca, Yahoo.co.uk, news.yahoo.com.
